The Peace Corps Tour!

BELIZE!!!

It is now May (sorry for the delay in updates,) and our brief, one-month, dry season has been replaced by nightly rollicking thunderstorms punctuating the otherwise steamy stillness of the days.  The intensity of these events mirrors the emotions we've been experiencing both in relation to our service coming to a close, and the latest plot twist:

Lee Gyal

I've just been diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease, an autoimmune disorder that creates hyperthyroidism.  That explains a lot of symptoms I've had that I had attributed to my exciting life here in a developing country.  As far as getting an illness goes, I am fortunate in that it is completely manageable, however it was a shock to adjust to the idea that I am not the "healthy" person I thought I was (or at least my thyroid is not!)  In any case, it adds another element of intrigue to the ongoing saga of my life here in Belize (7 hour bus trips to the doctor, more bureaucratic dealings, etc.)

In the meantime (there is always a meantime,) projects continue and good stuff happens.  We recently attended a wedding in Santa Cruz Village: a fun event that included 3 pigs, 100 pounds of chicken, 300 pounds of corn, and a young couple bound together by Maya tradition and Baptists missionaries.

We had a fantastic short visit from friends Michelle, Randy, and Sharon from Santa Fe, New Mexico.  They got a taste of Peace corps life, and an experience of the country of Belize while boosting our morale for the home stretch.  Thanks to unu for coming, and for those thoughtful friends who sent along care packages via their courier service!

Next week, we will attend our COS (Close of Service) Conference, a time to assess our service, plan for the future, meet with PCV friends for a final time, and to take hot showers and enjoy good food -- Yippee!

Our planned date of return to the States is July 21.  Til then, Take good care, and Keep in touch . . .
